Artist Statement
Through the lens of analog 35mm film photography, Queer Spectrum delves into the diverse and expansive landscape of queerness, embracing the complexity and beauty found at the intersections of identity. This series reflects a commitment to capturing subjects in their most unfiltered, natural states, preserving the authenticity of each moment. The raw quality of analog film reinforces a sense of timelessness, grounding the work in an honest representation of life as it unfolds.
At its core, Queer Spectrum affirms that queer identity is not solely defined by sexuality or gender but encompasses the full spectrum of human experience. Each portrait reveals an individual’s unique narrative, highlighting the intersections of body diversity, mental health, chronic illness, immigration, gender fluidity, non-monogamy, neurodivergence, parenthood, spirituality and atheism, military service, rural life, and more. The project moves beyond surface-level representations, delving into deeply personal aspects of each subject’s life that shape who they are.
The inspiration for this exhibit stems from a desire to challenge conventional narratives of queerness often seen in media and art, and to demonstrate that queer lives are as complex and varied as any other. Whether it’s the struggles of mental health, the challenges of living as an immigrant, or the journey toward self-acceptance while navigating an eating disorder, Queer Spectrum offers a platform to showcase these stories in a way that is both intimate and universal.
By focusing on the everyday experiences of queer individuals, the exhibition underscores the resilience, vulnerability, and strength that define this community. The portraits capture not just identities, but also moments of shared reflection, joy, and struggle, offering a glimpse into the depth and diversity of queer life. Ultimately, Queer Spectrum celebrates the vibrant, multifaceted lives within the queer community, embracing the fullness of each person’s identity and the stories they hold.
